Staringplein – Hofstede Heuvelhof
A square in the city and a garden in a hamlet.
This project is about observing reality versus the abstraction of painting. Studying the works of Koen van den Broek, Richard Diebenkorn, Jim Harris and Mattijs van den Bosch, I now see curves and abstract colour shapes all around.
In Baarsdorp, near Goes in Zeeland, film and video artists Paul and Menno de Nooijer live and work at Hofstede (farmstead) Heuvelhof. Their late medieval garden has an apple and walnut orchard.
Staringplein is an oval of grass in Amsterdam-West in the Overtoomse Sluis district.
I paint city and countryside and find similarities: time passes, light changes and it’s about colour contrast, shapes, directions and rhythm.
